I've been out of action for some time, labouring to meet the launch deadline for the new London Transport Museum website, which you can see at http://www.ltmuseum.co.uk/.
As some of you may know, the Museum has been closed since Autumn 2005 for a major transformation project. The listed Victorian flower market building that houses the Museum has been brought into the 21st century. It's now much more fit for purpose, and will allow curators to display fragile objects from the collections, which they could not do before without great risk.
The new Museum will open to the public on 22 November this year, and in advance of that, we wanted to create a new website with a fresh, vibrant look and feel to create a buzz around the new Museum that's in the works.
We've opted for an open design with lots of white space, to showcase the images and objects drawn from the Museum's impressive collections. In fact, we stripped the site down to its foundations and constructed a new architecture, led by users' needs, wishes and expectations.
At the heart of the site is a new digital collection of over 5000 posters and 900 artworks commissioned by London Transport (and Transport for London) since the early years of the 20th century. This is an incredible new resource, featuring a wealth of new interpretation, including some short essays on key topics, and the opportunity to search the collection by Artist, Date or Theme. New functionality to allow users to comment on individual objects is coming soon.
And, don't forget about the Photograph Collection, comprised of around 10 000 images.
